JSA Graduate Student Awards

Annually, JSA offers one graduate student scholarship of $750.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full time in a graduate program in any content area related to Japan and must have a paper or presentation accepted for the 2019 conference. Please submit a
complete copy of your paper with your proposal form, making sure that “Graduate Student” appears clearly on the first page of your paper and on the proposal form.

The successful applicants will be notified in October when acceptance letters are sent out to all conference participants.

Graduate Student Award for Best Paper or Best Presentation ($750)

Students intending to present at the conference should submit a paper of no less than 5,000 and no more than 7,000 words. The winning entrant will receive the $750 scholarship and their paper will be published in the JSA journal. Runner-up entries may also be considered for publication. Papers must represent original work that has not yet been published in other venues. Students must present their work at the conference to quality for the award.

If no "Best Paper" award is made, JSA's Board will consider giving a "Best Presentation" award.

Students eligible for this award must submit a script for a conference presentation which will run approximately 18-20 minutes. Supplemental materials, such as PPT slides or other visuals, may also be provided but are not required. Only those students who have submitted their scripts prior to December 3, 2018 to the Conference Co-Chairs will be eligible for the award. Criteria for effective performance will be cogency of presentation, ability to keep to time, and effective communication of central ideas or information.

For more information, please contact the Conference Co-Chairs.
